Canoe Ride in Chitwan National Park
Description
Step into a hollowed-out wooden canoe and let the current carry you through one of Chitwan’s most tranquil experiences. As your guide paddles quietly downstream, the jungle reveals itself slowly — a heron taking flight, a crocodile slipping into the water, the distant call of unseen birds. It’s a slow, sensory way to connect with the park, far removed from the buzz of a jeep safari.

Overview
What is the Canoe Ride in Chitwan?
The canoe ride is a gentle float down the Rapti River in a traditional dugout canoe each one carved from a single tree trunk. With a licensed guide and a boatman steering, you glide silently past sandbanks where gharial and mugger crocodiles bask, while kingfishers and storks work the shallows. Because there’s no engine, wildlife stays relaxed and close, making it one of the best activities in Sauraha for birdwatchers, photographers and families. Most guests pair the canoe ride with a guided jungle walk after landing downstream.

What to wear and bring?
Clothing: Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes or boots, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts to protect against insects and thorns. Opt for natural or dark, neutral colors (avoid bright colors like red, white, or orange) to blend in with the environment and avoid disturbing the animals.

Best time for Canoe Ride
The ideal time is the dry season, from October to March, when pleasant weather and clear conditions make wildlife easier to spot.
