Chitwan National Park is one of the finest birdwatching destinations in Nepal with more than 540 bird species have been recorded here, roughly two-thirds of every species found in the country. Best time & how to reach Sauraha
Best time: November to February brings winter migrants and waterbirds in big numbers; March to April offers breeding plumage and active nesting. Early morning is best any month. Resident species can be seen year-round; monsoon (June–August) is greener and quieter but wetter.

Wear neutral/earth-tone long clothing, closed walking shoes, and bring water, insect repellent, sunscreen and binoculars. Avoid bright colours and strong perfumes. Leeches can appear in the wet months, so socks and repellent help.

Wildlife you may encounter
Chitwan National Park is home to over 50 mammal species and 750+ bird species. Common wildlife sightings during a jeep safari include: One-horned Rhinoceros, Spotted & Sambar Deer, Wild Elephants, Crocodiles (Gharial & Mugger), Monkeys and reptiles, Exotic birds like hornbills, kingfishers, and eagles
The park also shelters the elusive Royal Bengal tiger, with occasional lucky sightings.
What to wear and bring?
Clothing: Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes or boots, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts to protect against insects and thorns. Opt for natural or dark, neutral colors (avoid bright colors like red, white, or orange) to blend in with the environment and avoid disturbing the animals.
Essentials: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, binoculars for better viewing, and a camera.
Best time for Bird Watching
The ideal time is the dry season, from October to March, when pleasant weather and clear conditions make wildlife easier to spot. April and May are also rewarding, as rising temperatures draw animals toward shrinking water sources. The monsoon months (June to September) transform the landscape into a lush green haven, though heavy rains may limit access and lead to occasional trail closures.
