Who are the Tharu?

The Tharu are the Indigenous people of Nepal’s Terai lowlands and have lived around Chitwan for generations. Their traditions, music, homes and food shape daily life in Sauraha.

The Tharu dance show

A programme of traditional dances, music and dress performed by the local community, held at the Tharu Cultural Dance Centre in Sauraha. The signature is the stick dance (lathi naach), where sticks are struck in rhythm to pounding drums, and you are invited to join in at the finale. You may also see the peacock dance and a fire dance. It is a seated performance, great for families. See the Tharu dance show page.

The Tharu village tour

A guided walk with a local guide through a Tharu village shows traditional longhouses, hand-painted and carved wall decoration, kitchen gardens and everyday life, and includes the Tharu Cultural Museum with farming tools, fishing gear and dress. It is easy and suits all ages. A small museum fee may apply. See the Tharu village tour page.

How to visit respectfully

  • Ask before photographing people or their homes.
  • Dress modestly and walk quietly through the village.
  • Buy crafts and food from local people when you can.
  • Follow your local guide’s advice.
